Beautiful Moments (Part 33) - Baby portraits for Orphan’s Lifebook

Today, I was invited by Mother’s Choice to take some baby portraits for their children….all are orphans at 3months to 3 year old waiting to be adopted.   These photos would go into their Lifebook, a photo album Mother’s Choice created for each of their orphans.   These albums include photographs capturing various milestones.  It serves as a priceless gift for their future adoptive parent, as well as for the children him/herself.  Since I found out they have this ongoing “Lifebook” project, I had been wanting and proposing to help them take more professional photographs as I thought it would be very meaningful. and today i finally got the chance.

As all orphans are under protection by the HKSAR government, I could not post any photographs here which show their faces.  But I must say, I’ve created some of my favorite works today.   It felt so good to have toddlers climbing all over me during the session, and there was a very special girl I met today which really touched my heart.

Family Session at Happy Valley Racecourse

This is the first time I photograph at Happy Valley Racecourse, and to my surprise, it is quite a good location, especially during the sunset time. Today’s session involved a family of 7.  My client’s parents came to HK for visit and would just be staying a short while, thus, today is the perfect time to do some family portraits.

Beautiful Moments (Part 32) - Summer Photography Course

I was invited by HK Federation of the Blind to be in charge of a beginners summer photography workshop for their members’ children.  There were 9 students at age of 8-16. My task was to teach them some basic concepts for photography thru samples, exercise, and life demonstration.

These are some of the contents covered in the workshops:

  • What is F-stop
  • What is shutter speed
  • What is ISO
  • Lens differences (Wide angle v.s. Tele)
  • Do’s & Don’ts (Things to watch out when taking a photograph)
  • Angles (Bird’s eye view, Eye Level, Worm’s eye view and their effects on the subject)
  • Key components to a photograph
  • Bounce card v.s Direct Flash
  • Light Painting
  • Handling of camera
  • Caring for the camera

I had great fun with my students during these two 3-hour workshops.  Every student was very attentive and they all passed my oral tests at the end :)
I must thank HKFB again for giving me such opportunity and looking forward for more fun classes in the future.

Beautiful Moments (Part 31) - Elderly & Family Portraits for Caritas Elderly Homes

This is the 3rd time I got invited by Caritas to do this…. doing family portraits for their members.  Many of my subjects are really really old, like 80-90 years old. It is surprising that some elders still remembered me from last year, some don’t remembered, and some left :(  .  I feel very warm to see their families, spouses, or grand-children all took the time to come to the center to take photos with their parent / grandparent.  I witness love, relationship, and time.

Although many elders are shy and they would begin their session by saying ‘ah.. i am so old now with so many wrinkles, why still need to take photos?’… but as soon as I warmed them up and show them what I took, I would see a smile on their face, and they would automatically come up with more poses on their own.  Two subjects inspires me most, children & elders.   I respect elders for their wisdom.  I think they are most beautiful when laughing and my shutter would just click click and click if I see them burst into laughter.  I liked their eyes, often filled with serenity; smiles filled with kindness; and poses with a flavour of shyness.. which together, come out to be very ‘cute’.  I think this is the best word I would use to describe them. Their cuteness really inspires me.

Beautiful Moments (Part 30) - Wee Care playday at Stanley’s Beach

Today, I was invited by Mother’s Choice to photograph for their playday at Stanley’s beach this early morning.  Around 12 Wee Care babies participated the event… to get into their swimsuit, get into the water and sunbath.  My job was to capture some memories for them.

After the session, I was crazy enough to put all my gears into the locker, put on my bikini,  and had 30min swim as well.   What a great way to start the day, with children, photography, and exercise!
